How we score waterproofing companies in Rock County

Rock County Waterproofing Guide is an independent directory covering 28 waterproofing businesses serving Rock County, Wisconsin. Every score on this site comes from one rubric applied the same way to every listing. This page explains what goes into that rubric, why it's weighted the way it is, and where it falls short.

The five signals

Each business gets a composite score from 0 to 100, built from five measured signals. Here they are in order of weight, heaviest first.

SignalWeightWhat it measures
Sentiment28%What recent reviews actually say: praise vs. recurring complaints
Rating26%The business's aggregate Google star rating
Volume20%How many reviews exist, log-scaled
Recency12%How recently customers left reviews
Completeness14%Whether phone, website, hours, and address are all listed

Why sentiment carries the most weight

A star average flattens everything into one number, and that's exactly the problem. Two waterproofing companies can both sit at 4.3 stars while telling very different stories underneath: one has a scattered mix of minor gripes, the other has the same complaint showing up again and again, missed appointments, a sump pump installed wrong, a crew that never called back about a leak. You can't see that difference from the star count alone. You have to read what people are actually saying.

That's what the sentiment signal does. We synthesize the themes running through a business's recent reviews, what customers keep praising and what keeps coming up as a problem, and weight it above the raw star average for that reason. It's the closest thing we have to catching a pattern before it becomes your problem too.

Why the other signals matter

Rating (26%) is still the single clearest public signal of how a business performs over time, so it carries nearly as much weight as sentiment. Volume (20%) is log-scaled on purpose: a company with 4 reviews and a company with 400 shouldn't be treated as equally certain, but 400 shouldn't count 100 times more than 40 either. Recency (12%) matters because a waterproofing crew's roster, management, and workmanship can shift over a few years, and a review from 2019 tells you less than one from this year. Completeness (14%) rewards businesses that make it easy to actually reach them, current phone number, working website, listed hours, and a real address, all basic signs of a business that's easy to hold accountable.

Where this falls short

Be clear-eyed about the limits. A business with only a handful of recent reviews doesn't have enough signal to trust, and we label those as low-confidence scores rather than pretend otherwise. We synthesize themes from reviews; we don't republish them word for word, and every listing links back to Google so you can read the original reviews yourself and judge for your own basement or foundation job. This score is a starting point for your research, not a replacement for calling around and getting a written quote.

Editorial independence

Scores here come only from the rubric above, applied to the data we have on each business. Nobody edits a score after the fact. If a listing includes paid placement, it's labelled as such, plainly, on the page, and paying for placement never changes the number underneath it. If any list on this site had its picks or order reviewed by an editor rather than generated purely from the rubric, that's disclosed on that page directly.

Who runs this

Rock County Waterproofing Guide is an independent directory built to help homeowners in Rock County find companies that do basement and below-grade waterproofing work. Listings draw on publicly available business information and are checked for relevance to waterproofing before they're included. We are not a waterproofing contractor ourselves, and we do not sell rankings.

Sofia Kaur, Senior Editor, maintains the rankings and this methodology. If you spot an error, think a listing is missing or outdated, or have questions about how a score was calculated, reach the publisher at alberto@bintbiz.com.

FAQ

How is the composite score calculated?
It's a weighted blend of five signals: sentiment (28%), rating (26%), volume (20%), recency (12%), and completeness (14%). Sentiment and rating carry the most weight because they say the most about how a company actually treats customers.
Why does sentiment matter more than the star rating?
Two businesses can share the same star average while one has scattered complaints and the other has the same problem coming up over and over in recent reviews. Reading what reviews actually say is the only way to catch that kind of pattern, so we weight it above the raw star number.
Can a business pay to improve its score?
No. Scores come only from the rubric and the data behind it, and they're never edited after the fact. When paid placement exists on this site, it's labelled clearly and it never changes a business's score.
What does a low-confidence label mean?
It means a business doesn't have enough recent reviews for the score to be reliable. We label those cases rather than present a thin data set with the same confidence as a well-reviewed business.
