What is a sump pit?
A basin installed below the basement floor level that collects groundwater from perimeter drain tile and channels it to a sump pump for discharge.
A sump pit is a basin constructed into the basement floor to gather water that enters through the foundation's perimeter drain tile system. As groundwater seeps in along the footing, the drain tile directs it downward into the pit, where it pools until a sump pump activates and pushes the water out and away from the house through a discharge line.
Pit construction and materials vary by installation. Older pits may be formed from a hole dug in the floor, while newer installations often use plastic or concrete liner basins that prevent soil from collapsing inward and contaminating the water being pumped. Typical sizes range from 18 to 30 inches in diameter, though deeper and larger pits are sometimes needed in high-water-table areas common to Rock County basements. The pit must extend below the level where drain tile enters so gravity can move water into it without backup.
Proper sizing and liner condition are critical for system reliability. An undersized pit fills too quickly and can cause the sump pump to run constantly, while a deteriorated or missing liner allows sediment and soil particles to enter, clogging the pump intake and reducing efficiency. Waterproofing contractors assess pit condition as part of drain tile and sump pump evaluations, especially when existing systems underperform or when new perimeter drainage is installed.
