What is hydrostatic pressure?

Hydrostatic pressure is the continuous downward and lateral force exerted by saturated soil and groundwater against below-grade foundation components.

Hydrostatic pressure develops when soil surrounding a foundation becomes saturated with groundwater, typically after heavy rain, snowmelt, or in areas with high water tables. This water-heavy soil presses against foundation walls and basement slabs with significant force, pushing inward and downward. The pressure increases with depth, so the bottom of a basement wall or slab experiences greater force than the top.

This pressure causes two main problems. Water finds its way through small cracks, pores, and construction joints in concrete and masonry, leading to seepage and interior moisture. Over time and with sustained pressure, foundation walls can bow inward or crack, compromising structural integrity. In Rock County, where groundwater levels can be high during spring and after heavy storms, basements and crawl spaces are particularly vulnerable to hydrostatic pressure damage.

Unlike temporary water problems from roof leaks or plumbing, hydrostatic pressure is a constant, predictable force that builds as long as soil remains saturated. Managing it requires either reducing the water load around the foundation or providing drainage systems that redirect groundwater away from the structure.
